It all started in the year 2002 when an anonymous letter from a Dera Sacha Sauda sadhvi was sent to the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The letter accused Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh of raping women who were a part of the cult. The letter also stated that that Ram Rahim warned the victims against speaking out against him and scared them by showing glimpses of his political clout in the states of Haryana and Punjab, where most of the Dera Sacha Sauda followers come from. After that, the Punjab and Haryana high court took the matter in their own hands and called for a CBI enquiry on the Dera chief. The CBI started their enquiry in September 2002. CBI started questioning the past female members of the Dera and out of the many women they questioned, two women spoke up against Ram Rahim and accused him of rape. The enquiry was already going on since many years and after five years of long follow ups, CBI filed a chargesheet against Ram Rahim on July 30, 2007. The hearing of this case was going on since 2007 and finally the court has come to a verdict. A verdict which didn’t go too well with the cult’s followers.

Another shocking revelation from the case was when Khatta Singh, a former aide and driver of Ram Rahim came forward as a witness to testify against the so-called Godly man.

The letter written to Atalji claimed that Ram Rahim had sexually assaulted more than 40 female members of the Dera. This shocking turn in the case saw a lot of heads going down in disappointment and the motives of the cult started being questioned.

The one who wrote the letter described the first assault instance, where she was asked to meet by the Dera chief in his room late at night. When she entered the room, she saw a porn film being played on a screen and a gun next to Ram Rahim who was settled in his bed. Ram Rahim raped her that night and this series of assault continued for the next three horrifying years.

Ram Rahim rape case finally came to a verdict on Friday August 25, 2017 where he was found guilty on rape charges. Ram Rahim will face a minimum of 7 years in prison, however, the exact duration is yet to be decided. Further details from the court will be out by August 28. The rape case verdict left Ram Rahim’s followers agitated and this resulted in riots all around the Punjab and Haryana regions.

Punjab Government Imposed Section 144 to Avoid Any More Casualties

After Ram Rahim’s news hit the public, people lost their minds and started riots in Punjab and Haryana. The riots resulted in the death of 30 people and left more than 250 people injured. All the events taking place were horrifying. According to an Indian Railways spokesperson, two train stations were burnt in Punjab and two empty train coaches of the Rewa Express were set on fire in Anand Vihar station, Delhi. An NDTV van was attacked by the protesters and an engineer was injured during this. Many OB vans of news channels were burned and destroyed by the rioters.

All the chaos resulted in imposing curfew in the states of Punjab and Haryana. The incidences of buses being burnt were also reported. However, the conductor and the driver showed exemplary courage and helped more than 150 passengers exit the buses safely.
